Individual Grants

Individuals Seeking Fellowships

The vast majority of Ford Foundation grants go to organizations. Historically, we have provided a very limited number of fellowship opportunities for individuals, focusing on advanced degrees in areas of interest to the foundation. When available, recipients are selected by universities and other organizations that receive grants from the foundation to support fellowships.

    Ford Foundation Fellowship Programs

  • The Fellowship Programs, offered through the National Academy of Sciences, seeks to increase faculty diversity at U.S. colleges and universities. Fellowships are made at the predoctoral, dissertation and postdoctoral levels to students who demonstrate academic excellence, a commitment to pluralism and a strong interest in teaching and research. Eligible applicants include citizens, nationals and permanent residents of the United States, as well as individuals granted deferred action status under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
  • Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program

  • Established in 2001, the International Fellowships Program is entering its concluding phase. The final cohort has been selected, and the program will conclude in 2013. Fellows represent historically disadvantaged groups from outside the United States. IFP has identified nearly 4,350 emerging leaders. More than 80 percent have completed their studies and are now at home serving their communities.
